How should a sitemap be designed?
Multiple sitemap should be generated for all categories, sub categories and the products. They should be named as sitemap1.xml, sitemap2.xml etc.
One sitemap file should include URLs of one category, its parent category, sub category and quiz pages in the following manner

Parent Category Pages (Quizzes, Hangan, Crosswords, Personality texts)
Inner Category Section (falling under each of the above categories)
Actual Quiz Pages
Actual Question Pages

In this way you may include all the URLs of the site within the sitemaps.

Sitemap Index File:
Once all the sitemaps are completed, a major sitemap should be created and named as “Sitemapindex.xml” which should contain link to all the mini sitemaps along with the

  • Homepage
  • Search
  • FAQ
  • All other Top level Pages
  • Any other Page whose link may be existing in the home page (About Us, FAQ… etc)

Following is a standard XML sitemap

XML Sitemap

You may get it from http://www.sitemaps.org/protocol.php

The sitemap URLs should have the component <lastmod> date which would mention the last time the particular file was updated. This would give the search engine spiders intimation about the update and help them in the indexation process.
1. The <lastmod> date should change and get updated from a CMS/data base whenever the page has an “update”.
2. <priority> should be as under
Homepage – 1
Parent Category - .9
Sub category - .8
Quiz Pages & Questions pages  - .7
Important Top level Pages - .8
Other Pages (not important for users) - .4

3. <changefreq> should be maintained at - <monthly>
Priority of some sections may be changed to <weekly> in case there is frequent addition of quiz in that section.

What may be considered to be an “update”?

  • Addition in the quiz
  • Addition in the content of a particular page
  • A comment in a particular page
  • Product review submitted by the user

URL Structure:
The existing URLs of the category, sub category, listing pages and product pages need to be modified and changed into a cleaner URL format. (This should be done in the way suggested in Onpage Recommendations docs).

Procedure to be followed once a new URL is generated
Canonical Tag:
The new URL thus generated should be considered as the main URL and be inserted into the Canonical Tag. Canonical tag is a part of the page header.
Following is the Canonical Tag Structure
<link rel="canonical" href="NEW-URL/" />

Old URL Redirection:
The Old existing URLs should now be redirected to their newer counterparts after proper URL Mapping. This is done so as to avoid duplicate content issue.

Update in Sitemap:
A change from the Older URL to the Newer URL demands a change in the sitemap. The URL existing in the sitemap should also be modified and replaced with the new URL.
